About Demre
Demre lies at the western end of Antalya province on a wide plain formed by the Demre river, a farming town with a long history. Rows of greenhouses across the plain are the first thing you notice; in the town itself stands the Church of St Nicholas, where the saint served as bishop, and just to the north is ancient Myra with its rock tombs and well-preserved theatre. Boats from the Cayagzi and Ucagiz piers head out to Kekova island, where the remains of a sunken city can be seen, and to the castle at Simena.
Accommodation is in small town hotels, guesthouses and boutique houses on the Ucagiz–Kalekoy side; there are no large resorts. It is a good base for people visiting the ancient sites, groups going kayaking or boating over Kekova and walkers on the Lycian Way. Nearby, the harbour and museum at Andriake, ancient Sura, Kas and Finike all make easy day trips.
From Antalya Airport the route follows the D400 coastal road; progress is quick as far as Kemer and Kumluca, then beyond Finike the road hugs the shore with many bends, about 167 km / 155 minutes in total. Demre is also about 195 km from Dalaman Airport. Your driver takes you to the door of your hotel or guesthouse; allow an extra 25–30 minutes for Ucagiz and Kalekoy. As it is a long drive, a minibus is more comfortable for larger groups. Finike, Adrasan and Kumluca are on the way.
