About Foca
Foca is a two-harbour town north of Izmir built over the ancient city of Phokaia; it consists of Old Foca and New Foca, 20 km further north. The Greek stone houses around the Kucuk Deniz and Buyuk Deniz harbours, the Beskapilar ruins, the Siren Rocks among the islands and Orak and Incir islands, home to the protected Mediterranean monk seal, are its best-known places. Because the coast is a Special Environmental Protection Area, building is restricted.
Accommodation is in boutique hotels in stone houses, family-run guesthouses and villas in seaside holiday complexes; there are no large resorts. Couples looking for a quiet fishing town, visitors taking day boat trips to the islands, families who like the calm coves of New Foca and Izmir residents on a weekend break are typical guests. New Foca is 25 minutes away, Pergamon 60 minutes and Dikili 70 minutes.
From the airport the route follows the Izmir ring road and the Izmir–Canakkale road north, then after the Foca turn-off a two-lane road through olive groves, about 90 km / 85 minutes. The ring road can be busy with commuter traffic in the morning and evening; beyond the Foca turn-off the road is flat and quiet. Hotels are reached door to door; in the narrow streets around Kucuk Deniz the driver pulls up at the harbour. Guests going to New Foca should give their address. A minibus suits large groups. Menemen and Aliaga lie on the way.
