About Mugla
Muğla is the capital of the province of the same name and, unlike the resorts on the coast, lies inland at about 650 metres on the edge of a plain. The city is known for its old whitewashed houses with tiled roofs and distinctive Muğla chimneys; the historic quarter around Saburhane, the Arasta bazaar, the Kurşunlu Mosque and the Konakaltı Han can be seen on foot in half a day. Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University keeps the city young and lively all year.
Accommodation is in city hotels and boutique hotels in restored old mansions; there are no holiday resorts. Most people come to Muğla for business, the university, government offices or hospital visits; others come to see family or for a quiet city break in winter. Summer heat is milder than on the coast. The city sits at the junction of the roads to Bodrum, Milas and Akyaka.
From the airport the route follows the main road via Ortaca and Köyceğiz, then after Gökova climbs to the plain on a winding mountain road over the Sakar Pass; the road is well maintained and wide, about 85 km / 75 minutes in total. In winter there may be fog and occasionally snow on the pass, which lengthens the journey. City streets are wide and every address is reached door to door; in the narrow lanes of the historic quarter a short walk may be needed. Any vehicle type is suitable. Akyaka is 25 minutes away and Marmaris 45 minutes.
