About Pamukkale
Pamukkale is a village 20 km north of Denizli, known for the white travertine terraces formed by calcium-rich thermal water flowing down the hillside, and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Ancient Hierapolis above the travertines with its great theatre and necropolis, the Antique Pool (Cleopatra Pool) where you swim among fallen columns, the Hierapolis Archaeology Museum and the nearby ancient city of Laodicea are its best-known places. The travertines may only be walked on barefoot.
Accommodation is in small hotels and guesthouses in Pamukkale village and in thermal hotels at nearby Karahayit with its red-water springs. Travellers who want to see the travertines at sunrise, history enthusiasts exploring Hierapolis in detail, couples seeking thermal treatments and families adding an inland day to a coastal holiday are typical visitors. Karahayit is 10 minutes away, Laodicea 20 minutes and central Denizli 25 minutes.
From Dalaman Airport the route heads north towards Koycegiz, then over mountain roads via Cameli and Acipayam to Denizli and on to Pamukkale, about 220 km / 200 minutes; there are winding sections over the passes. From Antalya Airport it is about 240 km, and from Izmir Airport about 230 km by motorway. As it is a long drive, a stop can be made. Hotels are reached door to door; for day trips the south or north gate of the travertines can be given as the drop-off. A minibus or midibus suits groups.
