About Akyaka
Akyaka is a small coastal town in Ula district, at the innermost end of the Gulf of Gökova. What sets it apart is its building style, adapted by the architect Nail Çakırhan from traditional Ula houses: timber eaves and tiled roofs. This style is now written into the town planning rules, and Akyaka is a member of the international Cittaslow network of slow towns. The Azmak, which flows into the sea right beside the town, is a clear, cold spring-fed river; from the restaurants on its banks you can see the riverbed.
Accommodation is in boutique hotels, guesthouses and rented houses; there are no large hotels. The town beach is sandy and shallow, which makes it good for families with small children; a steady afternoon wind has made Akyaka one of the best-known kitesurfing spots in Turkey. Boat trips on the Azmak, Çınar beach, a boat excursion to Sedir Island and the walking trails around the town are the most popular activities. Couples, surfers and families coming from Muğla at weekends are the typical visitors.
From the airport the route follows the main road via Ortaca and Köyceğiz; after Köyceğiz there is a winding but well-kept section through forested hills, about 78 km / 70 minutes in total. Streets in town are narrow and busy on summer weekends; your driver takes you to your hotel or house, and on a few narrow streets a short walk may be needed. A minibus-class vehicle is recommended if you are carrying surfing equipment. Marmaris is 30 minutes away and Muğla 25 minutes.
Hotel pickup
Your driver waits at the hotel, villa or marina entrance at the booked time with a sign showing your name. For villas without a reception he comes to the door; please be ready 10 minutes before pickup.
