About Kalkan
Kalkan is a former Greek fishing town that tumbles down a steep hillside to a small harbour, known for its whitewashed stone houses and narrow lanes draped in bougainvillea. Rooftop-terrace restaurants are its most distinctive feature; in the evening the harbour and the bay are watched from above. To the east, Kaputas beach, wedged between cliffs, is 7 km away.
Accommodation is mainly private-pool villas and boutique hotels spread across the slopes and the surrounding districts of Kalamar, Kisla and Kordere; there is no large resort. Days are for the beach clubs and boat trips, evenings for the bazaar and rooftop restaurants. Kalkan is favoured by families renting villas and couples after a quiet holiday, and it is especially popular with British visitors.
The journey is about 125 km / 110 minutes. The road is dual carriageway as far as Fethiye, then a winding mountain road climbing out of the Esen valley. Villas sit on steep, narrow lanes, so your driver comes to the door, but for some villa entrances the last few metres are on foot. The old town is pedestrianised; for hotels there you are dropped at the nearest point. A minibus is recommended for larger groups, a mid-size vehicle for narrow villa lanes. Patara and Kas are close by.
