About Patara
Patara is known for its 18 km beach and the ancient city that lies behind the dunes. The beach is a loggerhead turtle nesting site and a protected area, so there are no buildings on it and it is closed at night. Ancient Patara was the capital of the Lycian League; the assembly hall, the theatre and the re-erected lighthouse can be visited today. Accommodation is in the village of Gelemis, a few kilometres back from the beach.
Gelemis has guesthouses, small family hotels and a few villas with gardens; there is no large resort and no crowds. Days are for the beach and the ancient city, evenings for the handful of restaurants in the village; a dolmus runs from the village to the beach. The ancient cities of Xanthos and Letoon, Saklikent Gorge and Kalkan are all within half an hour. It attracts families who want quiet, history and a wide beach, and walkers on the Lycian Way.
The journey is about 115 km / 100 minutes. The road is flat as far as Fethiye and then open and easy along the Esen valley; after Kinik a short village road drops down to Gelemis. Your vehicle goes to the door of your guesthouse or villa in the village; the lanes are narrow but level. Any vehicle type is suitable; a minibus is more comfortable for families with a lot of luggage. Kalkan is 15 km and Kas 40 km away, so you can ask for a stop on the coast road.
