About Milas
Milas is a district town in north-western Mugla, inland from the Bodrum peninsula, built over Mylasa, the ancient capital of Caria. Within the town are the Roman-era Gumuskesen monumental tomb, the Baltali Kapi gate and the excavation site of the Hekatomnos tomb at Uzunyuva. Becin Castle on the hill south of the town, with the madrasa and bath remains left by the Mentese principality, is the best-known sight. The Tuesday market is one of the largest open markets in the Aegean, and Milas carpets, olive oil and the traditional houses of Comakdag village also define the district. Lake Bafa and ancient Herakleia to the north are 30 minutes away.
Accommodation is in city hotels, boutique mansions and rural guesthouses in the surrounding villages; people stay for cultural touring and short stopovers rather than beach holidays. Couples and groups touring ancient sites, travellers who want to stay near the airport because of flight times, business visitors and anyone wishing to visit the nearby ancient cities of Bafa, Labranda and Euromos choose Milas. Bodrum centre is 50 minutes away, the Gulluk seafront 20 minutes and Oren beach 50 minutes.
From Milas-Bodrum Airport, Milas town is reached by the airport road and the Milas–Bodrum highway, about 15 km / 20 minutes; the road is dual carriageway, flat and free of traffic. Hotels and mansions are reached door to door; where a large vehicle cannot turn in the narrow streets of the historic centre, the driver carries luggage a short distance. A standard saloon is sufficient for most guests; a minibus-class vehicle is recommended for large groups and those organising tours of the ancient sites. Gulluk is 20 minutes away and Bodrum 50 minutes.
