About Kayakoy
Kayakoy, south of Fethiye, is known for the abandoned stone village spread across a valley hillside. Hundreds of stone houses and two churches, emptied in the 1923 population exchange, are now visited as an open-air museum; around the village are olive groves, fields and pine forest. The walking trail down the hillside to Oludeniz takes about an hour and a half and is part of the Lycian Way.
Accommodation is villas with gardens, small guesthouses converted from stone houses and a few boutique hotels; there are no large resorts. Evenings are spent eating local food at village restaurants, days at Gemiler bay or down in Oludeniz. Couples looking for quiet and nature, walkers and families wanting to stay away from the crowds come here. There is no nightlife.
Flat from the airport to Fethiye, then a winding hill road via Hisaronu or Fethiye; about 60 km / 65 minutes in total. Lanes in the village are narrow and partly cobbled; the car reaches most villas, and at some houses the last 100 metres are on foot. Choose a minibus for a larger group, but be aware it may have to stop at the last junction on the narrowest lanes. Fethiye and Oludeniz are each 15 minutes away.
