About Gumbet
Gumbet is the neighbouring bay immediately west of Bodrum town, separated from it by a hill; the centre is five minutes by car or half an hour on foot. Its sandy beach of about a kilometre, shallow and calm sea, make it one of the busiest beaches on the Bodrum peninsula. Sunbed operators, water-sports stations and beach bars line the whole shore. The bar street behind the bay is one of the liveliest nightlife addresses on the peninsula. The old domed cisterns (gumbets) that gave the resort its name can still be seen; Bodrum Castle, the Museum of Underwater Archaeology and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus are in the neighbouring town.
Accommodation is mostly mid-range all-inclusive and half-board hotels, apart-hotels and family guesthouses behind the beach. Young groups, people who want nightlife close to the centre and families looking for an affordable beach holiday choose Gumbet. It is far cheaper and busier than Bodrum, but less peaceful. Bitez and Ortakent are a few minutes to the west, and the Bodrum bazaar and marina are a short dolmus ride away. Jet-ski, parasailing and banana boats are available all along the beach.
From Milas-Bodrum Airport, Gumbet is about 40 km / 45 minutes via the Bodrum ring road; the road is dual carriageway and comfortable, though traffic can slow at the entrance to Bodrum on summer evenings. Hotels are reached door to door; where a large vehicle cannot turn in the narrow lanes behind the beach, the driver carries luggage to the nearest point. A minibus-class vehicle is recommended for large groups of friends. Bodrum centre is 5 minutes away and Bitez 10 minutes.
