About Alanya
Alanya is a large district town built on both sides of a rocky peninsula where the Taurus Mountains meet the sea. The Seljuk-era castle on top of the peninsula, the octagonal Red Tower (Kizilkule) by the harbour and the old shipyard are the symbols of the town. Cleopatra Beach on the western side is long and sandy, while Keykubat Beach on the eastern side is quieter. Damlatas Cave in the town centre is known for its stalactites; the bazaar, harbour and seafront road are busy in the evenings. The Dim River valley, with its cool water and riverside restaurants, is the favourite escape on hot summer afternoons.
Accommodation in the town centre is in city hotels and apartments, while the eastern and western coastal strips are lined with all-inclusive resorts. Young people and couples wanting nightlife and shopping prefer the centre; families looking for a calmer beach head towards Oba, Kestel and Mahmutlar. The cable car up to the castle, Sapadere Canyon, Dim Cave and the Dim River are the main day trips; Side and Manavgat are an hour to the west.
Alanya is served by two airports. From Gazipasa-Alanya airport the coastal road takes about 45 km / 50 minutes; as its flight schedule is limited, most charter flights land at Antalya airport, from where the D-400 coast road is 125 km / about 2 hours. Coming from Antalya you pass Side, Manavgat and Okurcalar, and traffic slows at Manavgat and the entrance to Alanya on summer evenings. Hotels and apartments are reached door to door; large vehicles cannot enter the narrow streets inside the castle walls. A minibus-class vehicle suits families and groups.
